Being a student in Rouen, tips and ideas for outings

It’s back-to-school time, and the news isn’t always greeted with enthusiasm by those returning to school or university. The vacations may be over, but this article will put a smile back on your face, dear Rouen students! You’ll find some great tips and ideas for low-cost outings… Just what you need to brighten up your day!

Rouen, a student city

With over 40,000 students, Rouen is a great place to study. Its three major educational hubs (Mont-Saint-Aignan, Rouen center and Saint-Etienne-du-Rouvray) offer a wide range of study options: from medicine to law, business, science and languages, you’re bound to find a course to suit your fancy! The Réseau Astuce public transport network makes it easy to get around: the various TEOR and metro lines take you right to the main universities and schools. Did you know that the capital of Normandy ranks 1st in the top 10 cities in France with the most bars*? Enough to convince more than one student!

Accommodation in Rouen

Finding accommodation is not always easy when you arrive in a new town. The Logifac Gambetta and Pasteur residences offer furnished and fully-equipped studio and T2 apartments. Ideally designed to meet the specific needs of students, they are located close to shops and transport. The CFA du Bâtiment Georges Lanfry in Saint-Etienne-du-Rouvray offers a 20-room boarding school.

Free activities

When you’re a student in Rouen, or anywhere else, you’ve got to work within your budget. Low prices are great, free admission is even better! Rouen is a culturally rich city, the Réunion des Musées Métropolitains (RMM) allows free access to its 11 museums! Eight are located in Rouen, including the Musée des Beaux-Arts and its permanent collections, the Musée de la ferronnerie (Le Secq des Tournelles), the Musée des Antiquités and the Muséum d’histoire naturelle… The Munaé, Musée National de l’Éducation, also welcomes you free of charge! Culture is within everyone’s reach, so there’s no reason not to visit these downtown museums.

Rouen is also the scene of free events that enliven the city throughout the year: from July to mid-September, the majestic Cathedral lights up to the tune of a son et lumière show every evening. During the summer, you’ll also find the terrasses du jeudi in the month of July, as well as Rouen sur Mer on the quays of the Seine. In winter, Rouen Givrée awaits you with its pretty Christmas market on Place de la Cathédrale.

Going out in Rouen

Once classes are over, it’s time to relax. Remember that Rouen ranks among the French cities with the most bars*!

There’s no shortage of student hangout areas in Rouen. The charming place du Vieux-Marché offers numerous bars*, as do Place de la Pucelle, Rue Eau de Robec and Place de l’Hôtel de Ville. You’ll also find plenty to tempt you on the quais as you sit on a terrace with your friends, overlooking the Seine. Unless, of course, you prefer to dance the night away in one of the city’s discotheques.
