Jumièges Abbey
A Viking footprintFounded in the 7th century, Jumièges Abbey is one of the jewels of Normandy’s heritage, considered the most beautiful ruin in France by Victor Hugo, after its destruction in the 19th century. Its history was profoundly marked by the arrival of the Vikings in Normandy: in 841, these fearsome warriors pillaged and set fire to the abbey, forcing the monks to flee. It wasn’t until the 10th century that Rollon, Viking chieftain and first Duke of Normandy, restored peace to the region. Converted to Christianity, Rollon’s son rebuilt the abbey and laid the foundations for the Norman duchy. Even today, the majestic remains of Jumièges are a reminder of this tumultuous and fascinating history, making this site the ideal setting for an immersion into the world of the men of the North.
