« May this house be sublime », here is one of the grafittis in hebrew graved on the stones of this monument built around 1100. Rediscovered in 1976 under the Justice court of Rouen, its vestiges didn’t stop fuel the debates about its original utility. Rabbinical school, private residence or synagogue, the mystery still stay uncompleted nowadays.

Built in the beginnings of the XIIth Century, the Maison Sublime is a roman edifice in big sized stones. Thought its fonction isn’t clear-cut, the presence of the hebrew grafittis graved on its walls confirm its belonging to the jewish community of Rouen. In this way, it is the oldest jewish monument remaining in France.

The Maison Sublime is the architectural witness of an important plan of this history of the city, the medieval judaism. From the 11th Century to the beginning of the 14th Century, the jewish community of Rouen plays a major role in the economic, intelct and spiritual rise in the city.
